What are lakeballs

Lake balls, like new golf balls, come in several different types; with big differences in price and quality. The term "Lake Ball" is used loosely to describe a number of different balls which are second hand. These include balls that are lost during play in both the rough and underwater; and balls with slight manufacturing defects (x-out balls).

True lake balls are ones that have been submerged for at least several hours, if not days or longer. When a ball is submerged for so long, the water penetrates the surface layer and permanently alters the playing characteristics of the core of the golf ball. The effect this has depends from one golf ball to another, but generally means these balls are not suited to competitive play due to their inconsistency.

Most people cannot tell the difference between an original and a good refurbished (or Grade A) ball, however some think that the spraying changes the size of the dimples and therefore the aerodynamics of the ball.
While a bag may say "quality lake balls", there is no way of telling the quality of these balls as there no set standards for second hand balls.

Refurbished balls are usually good quality balls that have not been severely damaged, but still have had some cosmetic damage at the least. They are re-sprayed at a factory to ensure that the playing characteristics are as close to the original ball as possible.

Typically A grade or refurbished balls tend to be much better quality and have never been submerged and can be used with confidence. Price is a good guide to the quality of the ball. The cheaper packs of balls tend to be less consistent and have x-out balls and lake balls included. This means they are only really good for practising, although you may get the odd decent ball.

The main problems with poor quality "lake balls" is that you may not achieve consistent distance from one ball to the next. This is especially so in packs which have many different brands and types of ball.

In the end you can play very well with quality lake balls, and they can be a great choice if you lose golf balls often, however when you get to a certain ability, there is no substitute for the confidence and consistency you get from new balls.

Never tried Lake Balls before?
Don’t worry, they don’t squelch and no-one will know that they are lake balls unless you tell them!

What is the quality like?
Well these lake balls have obviously been hit before in the normal course of a round and will only show minimal wear & tear. Although there may be an occasional scuff mark, the majority are in great condition and will be very playable.

Why Should I try lake balls?
The main reason for trying lake balls is that you are receiving balls that can cost a lot of money, so you’ll make terrific savings. If you are prone to losing the odd golf ball, then you won’t feel as bad with these extremely low priced golf balls.
